BW Auto Dismantlers
BW Auto Dismantlers' commitment to improving business has been evident with a number of additions to its facility during the past few years. In the summer of 2007, the company (BWAutoDismantlers.com) completed a 5,500-square-foot production building, and in 2008, it built a 3,500-square-foot dismantling and shipping building. Most recently, in the summer of 2010, the business finished a complete showroom remodel including offices for sales, inventory, IT / e-commerce, DMV and bookkeeping.
"The completion of our showroom was long overdue, as we have been operating out of the same building since 1977," explained owner Jeff Buchanan. "We have really seen an increase in production and sales with a more comfortable sales staff, and professional waiting area that allows for customers to make an easier purchasing decision based on the professionalism of the facility."
Expanding The Product Line
Buchanan began managing BW Auto Dismantlers when his dad - Dee Buchanan, who co-founded the business with George Watkins in 1977 - died. He helped the business grow by expanding its product line.
"We started out specializing in Volkswagen parts; that's what we were known for," Buchanan stated. "In 2006 we bought Dad's Auto Dismantling. That put us into the Audi market. And by 2007 we were getting so many calls for German autos that we naturally progressed into other makes and models - Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and BMW."
BW Auto Dismantlers, located in Roseville, Calif., completed an additional production building in 2007 to focus on rebuilt components.
"The change in the industry with major consolidators offering rebuilt products and OEM, finding losses in market share helped shape our decision to continue with our strengths - new, used and aftermarket parts," explained Buchanan.
Almost 20 percent of BW Auto Dismantlers' sales comes from new and aftermarket parts. Regarding recycled auto parts, BW Auto Dismantlers invested in factory-authorized diagnostic software that verifies the condition of parts on German vehicles. Buchanan and his team also keep schematics, which allow them to look up the smaller parts that aren't readily available at many facilities.
"When it comes to German autos, we know the questions to ask to get [the customer] the right part," declared Buchanan. "We're a proud member of Team PRP, a nationwide network of independently-owned auto recyclers. We have access to parts all over the country."
BW Auto Dismantlers maintains a clear environmental focus.
"We're ARA Gold Seal certified," stated Buchanan. "We're also a member of Partners in the Solution compliance program through the State of California Auto Dismantlers Association (SCADA1.com). I spend a couple of hours each week making sure the facility is in compliance."
Buchanan is next in-line to take over the SCADA presidency. He is currently acting president due to the current president's recovery from a motorcycle accident. Buchanan officially begins his term in January 2012. He plans to address the issue of retaining salvage during his term.
"Accessing vehicles is getting tougher every day," he said. "That's part of the reason we expanded into other makes. Auctions allow anyone to buy cars. I'd like to see contractor licenses required by buyers trying to purchase salvage, and auto recyclers recognized as a visible means for end-of-life vehicle processing."
