15 MINUTES WITH DOUG REINERT

Doug Reinert officially becomes ARA president on October 23, 2010. He is already well prepared. Described as "well-spoken" and "considerate of others' input," he is a practiced member of the ARA executive committee and involved in his state association, the Pennsylvania Automotive Recycling Trade Society (PARTS).

MARRO MADE

Dave Marro Sr. started his career in the auto recycling industry more than 50 years ago by driving the busy streets of New York City delivering parts. He built his business, Mid-Island Auto Wreckers, Inc. - now located in the middle of Long Island in Deer Park, N.Y. - with perseverance, patience and foresight.

JOHN CAHILL

When John J.C. Cahill saw his boss and mentor Bill Stevens on the cover of the Locator UpFront September / October 2005 issue as 2005 boss of the year, he knew he wanted to achieve the same distinction as Stevens.

YOUNG GUN

For the first time, auto recyclers in Vermont are in serious need of representation. Unexpectedly, they've turned to a college student to lead the way.

ROUND TABLE

Green parts marketing. International vehicle-processing standards. Worldwide definitions for "auto recycler." End-Of-Life Vehicles (ELVs). The benefits of product reuse. These were some of the major topics discussed at the 2010 International Roundtable on Auto Recycling (IRT).

DYNAMIC DUO

Who would your top three picks for a fantasy auto recycling team be? They might include a finance whiz, someone with extensive product-acquisition knowledge and a top salesperson. Paul Delaney and Stoney Rutledge, founders of Late Model Import in Haltom City, Texas, have that in spades. Each brings a number of valuable business skills to the table, which helped them go from corporate vice presidents, to owners of a thriving small business.

COLD CASH

Winter can get pretty cold in Joliet, Ill. with a windchill factor that often sends customers scurrying indoors. That is one reason the father and son team of Paul Krause and Sean Krause, owners of Speedway Auto Parts, Ltd. (SpeedwayAP.com), are constructing an indoor self-service facility.

SILVER LINING

Ben Silver and Jeff Silver, co-owners of Central Foreign Auto Parts, Inc. in Denver, Colo., never worked on vehicles or willingly hung around their dad's auto recycling facility. In truth, they weren't planning on going into the family business at all.

TAKE A BOW

Jim Seamans thought he was just attending a typical Florida Auto Dismantlers & Recyclers Association (FADRA) convention this past July. Instead, he ended up being the star at a special roast in his honor.

PARTS RUSH

The scene at Pic-A-Part Used Auto & Truck Parts in Indianapolis, Ind. on July 11, 2010 may have resembled a chaotic free-for-all as hundreds of vehicles were stripped relentlessly all day, but the activities were planned and well advertised.
