On April 1, 2010, The Locator launched its new search engine, Part-Spot. The search feature went live as an enhancement to PartsLocator.com in January 2010, but became a stand-alone product at Part-Spot.com in April. Charis Lloyd, Locator executive vice president and Brian Jewell, Internet business manager, spent the last year developing Part-Spot as a way to bring new customers to the auto recycling industry and improve the experience of existing customers.

What is Part-Spot? Part-Spot is The Locator's real-time, part-search engine. It is a marketing tool for an auto recycler's inventoried parts.

———

How is this part search engine different from others? The search is different because it directly searches an auto recycler's inventory system in real time (or instantaneously). It is similar to how a counterperson would search the in-house inventory system and because the search is in real time, the entire inventory data is available. Part-Spot never collects data; it searches your current, up-to-the-minute inventory system. Other searches that collect and consolidate data represent only a snapshot of your inventory system at a given moment. In most cases, the snapshot is at least 24 hours old. When a user finds a part on Part-Spot, they can be confident the part is in stock.

———

Who can use Part-Spot? Part-Spot is free to search for anyone with Internet access.

———

What are some of Part-Spot's other unique features? The VIN can be used to automatically populate the year / make / model of the search vehicle; and users can search up to 10 part types concurrently, which is a huge time saver. This means an auto recycler's inventory is more likely to be searched multiple times. Once the user finds a part, a custom quote can be generated with up to 10 different part suppliers. The quote has a unique number that both the user and the supplier can use for future reference. The quote also displays the part grade and damage description.

———

What is the advantage of the quote? The quote allows the user to summarize the parts they are interested in and save it to a custom PDF or text file. The unique quote number is also saved to the auto recycler's value board. The quotes can then be used for work orders, estimates, project vehicles or self-repair needs.

———

What is the value board and how can auto recyclers use it? The value board displays the number of parts searched and the total value of those parts. It provides the auto recycler with an up-to-minute view of search activity.

———

Who can sign up to have their inventory on Part-Spot? Any auto recycler that prices parts, grades parts and describes parts in an inventory management system can sign up for Part-Spot.

———

Which inventory systems work with Part-Spot? Part-Spot works with Checkmate, HYMS, Pinnacle Classic, Pinnacle Pro and Powerlink 2.

———

How is it beneficial to auto recyclers that this product is coming from The Locator? The Locator is one of the most recognized brands in the auto recycling industry with more than 50 years of marketing history.
