15 Minutes With ARA’s Kim Glasscock

A thousand recyclers will head to Nashville, Tenn. this fall for the 71st Annual ARA Convention. With an intriguing venue like “Music City,” and work sessions with thought leaders in the industry, the convention is sure to be a draw. We caught up with meeting planner Kim Glassock to get the inside scoop on what’s new and exciting at this year’s meeting, scheduled for Oct. 22 - 25, 2014.

Digital Customers

Self-service facilities are a common business model in the auto recycling industry. There are an estimated 500 to 700 of these yards across North America. These facilities - with their one million vehicles in inventory - drain fluids, but store the vehicle whole and allow customers to pull their own parts. They typically cater to the local public, or anyone who can walk in through the door, unlike full-service yards which sell their parts nationwide via Internet-based parts locating systems and eBay; that is until now.

Bill Champion

When the Colorado Automotive Recyclers (CAR) association decided to champion a state salvage-titling bill, it did so knowing that if passed, there wouldn’t be a big monetary gain for the Colorado auto recycling industry. CAR decided to do it anyway simply because the bill was a huge score for consumer safety. HB1299 was signed into law on April 25, 2014.

On Her Own

Nothing stops Ann Tittle. She has survived a devastating motorcycle accident, weathered a divorce, jumped headfirst into business ownership and faced sexism in a male-dominated industry.

Miracle Maker

Sabrina Wisher’s license plate could be her personal mantra. It reads NoGvnUp (No Givin’ Up), a tribute to the daily blessing in her life, aka daughter Mikayla. Sabrina has spent the past 23 years caring for Mikayla, who is unable to speak, walk or feed herself. The experience not only has shaped Sabrina’s positive outlook on life, it’s earned her a coveted title, Montana Mother of the Year by American Mothers.

Get Ready

In May, the auto recycling industry saw a new National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) reporting enforcement effort from the Department of Justice (DOJ). Unlike previous enforcement efforts that identified businesses that may have been under-reporting, the newest push is focusing on businesses that have not been reporting at all.

Iowa History

When Burgandi Carr drives home from work each night, she often makes a few stops along the way.

Speak Softly

It was Saturday during the 6th Annual Automotive Recyclers of Michigan (ARM) Road Show and Business Networking Conference when Donna Middleton, of Middleton Auto Parts in Fraser, Mich., was announced as being the state’s auto Recycler of the Year.

High-Strength Steel

Over the last decade, auto makers around the globe have been increasing the use of ultra-high-strength steels (boron steel or manganese-boron alloy steel) in critical safety areas on car frames. These new alloys are an extremely difficult cutting challenge for auto recyclers and emergency responders extracting victims from vehicle accidents.
