POWER PACKED

Meet 25 Of The Best Auto Recyclers

"Aggressive, top-notch facilities that understand the power of networking and education." That's how Locator Executive Vice President / C.O.O. Charis Lloyd described the businesses featured on the following pages.

Once again, Locator UpFront has gathered together leaders, visionaries and icons of the automotive recycling industry into one powerful issue. For the fifth straight year, the Most Influential issue has been highly anticipated by those in the industry.

"If you've been around the automotive recycling industry, most of the names featured here should be familiar to you," said Lloyd. "If you don't know someone featured on the following pages, make it a point to get to know them." All of the winners except for one are members of the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) and can be seen frequently at industry conferences, events and trade shows.

In today's world, it's more important than ever to stay in touch with the current trends and legislation shaping the automotive recycling industry, noted Lloyd.

"2009 was a huge year for the industry," she said. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System or NMVTIS went live early in 2009 and was designed to protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles and to reduce the chances of a stolen vehicle being resold.

"This added some cost to the recyclers for submitting their inventory," explained Lloyd, "but companies like Hollander have worked to simplify the procedure.

"The Cash for Clunkers program was another newsmaker and it gave recyclers a real boost in their inventory," Lloyd continued. "However, recyclers paid a short-term price as far as the money outlay for the cars, the manpower to process them and, in many cases, alternative land to store the cars.

"We were aware of a few of the winners through their work with ARA on the Cash for Clunkers program," Lloyd explained.

However, hundreds of other nominees came to light through The Locator's continuous contact with auto recyclers from around the country.

The grueling selection process for next year's winners will begin almost before the ink is dry on this issue. What begins as a list of more than 250 nominees is painstakingly narrowed to just 25 winners in a variety of industry categories.

Lloyd and members of The Locator's sales team typically travel coast-to-coast throughout the year attending seminars and trade shows - and visiting a variety of dismantling facilities along the way. During their travels, the staff remains on the constant lookout for trendsetters, emerging leaders and seasoned veterans making an impact in the industry.

In addition to traveling across the country, employees listen to comments and suggestions from recyclers through hundreds of monthly phone conversations. Nominations pour in from peers during industry trade shows as well as via e-mail, mail and fax. Editorial staff members also comb through various news outlets searching for automotive recyclers influencing the industry.

"Many in the industry tell us we couldn't have chosen better winners," Lloyd said. "We have also had several winners who were surprised they were chosen." Read on to see if you agree with this year's top selections.
