The firefighters who regularly train on vehicles at Pacific Auto Salvage, Inc. in American Canyon, Calif. (PacificAutoSalvage.com) are often called heroes. But owner F. John Azevedo may also deserve the title. As a highly respected auto recycler, he has given back to the community.

"When someone needs something in our community, John is there," said wife Shirley Azevedo. "The local officials, the firefighters and the school district can all count on him."

Azevedo regularly goes to bat for the auto recycling industry. He won the 2010 ARA star award for regional director.

"Every task ARA has given him, he's given 110 percent," said Bill Tolpa, president of Tolpa's Auto Parts in Remsen, N.Y. (Tolpas.com) and ARA immediate past president. "He has been in this industry for a long time and has vast knowledge. He watches everyone, learns from them, adds his own flavor and then comes out with thoughts that are brilliant. His out-of-the-box thinking, always helping others, makes him worthy of this award."

"John certainly goes out of his way to inspire auto recyclers to get involved in their association," said Doug Reinert of Chuck's Auto Salvage, Inc. in Douglassville, Pa. (ChucksAS.com). "He has taken time away from his business to emphasize the benefits of membership. He has helped recyclers get active on a governmental level."
