ISRI Successfully Gains EPA Clarification on Recycling of Automobiles with Airbags

Since the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a memo in June 2017 regarding the regulatory status of recalled Takata airbags stored in warehouses, there has been a great deal of concern in the recycling industry as to whether not airbags were considered hazardous materials. Auto recyclers, shredder operators, and other airbag stakeholders were left with a number of regulatory questions about both Takata and non-Takata airbags that still remained in vehicles destined for recycling.

Alter Trading Corporation Acquires Tenenbaum Recycling Group

Alter Trading Corporation announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase substantially all the assets of Tenenbaum Recycling Group (TRG), based in Little Rock, Ark. The acquisition brings together two scrap metal recycling companies that are each over 120 years old and have very similar cultures and histories of success. The addition of TRG's 10 locations, primarily in Arkansas, further expands Alter's geographic reach and increases its number of facilities to more than 70. Alter intends to continue to operate all of TRG's existing locations and to maintain their focus on safety, customer service, and quality.

ARA and ARC Sent Joint Letter on Import of Automobiles and Parts

The Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) and the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) submitted a joint letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce on July 13, 2018 regarding the Federal Government’s national security investigation of imports of automobiles and automobile parts. The joint letter expressed concerns with potential unintended consequences on the automotive parts industry that far exceed any relevance to the issue of national security.
